The Great Wave off Mata Nui

A great storm is brewing off the island paradise of Mata Nui. A mysterious canister fights off the waves to bring its occupant to their final destination.

There have been many influences in my life, but two big ones are Hokusai and Lego.

Growing up I had no interest in art until I laid eyes on Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa. To this day it still captures my imagination and is just as impressive seeing it in person at the Sumida Hokusai Museum.

Lego provided a creative outlet as a kid, and building the sets had an almost mediation like quality, being able to block out outside influences and focusing on the task at hand. Bionicle was one of my favorite Lego toylines combining well designed sets, great visual, a bit of mysticism and a fleshed out world.

The story of Bionicle begins with a storm bringing the protagonists to the island, and this is my interpretation of that moment, borrowing from Hokusai’s iconic work. It was a pleasure to bring it to life.
